Consider these words from one of his Psalms –, Psalm 43:5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? What about the bitterness of Joseph? It’s easy to see how Joseph might have been tempted to resent his brothers; yet there was someone else that he might also have been tempted to resent. Let’s look at three ‘afflictions’ Joseph went through in the period between the ages of 17 – 30, and how God made him fruitful at every stage, culminating in him becoming Pharaoh’s top Executive and Egypt’s highest civil servant. Though pits can be very painful during the time we’re trying to endure them, scripture teaches us that in the long run, they can be very beneficial. Trusting in God does not mean we sit back allow pain to consume us, instead, it leads us to strive, with hope, to see the salvation God’s presence assures. 37:23-30 They threw Joseph into a pit, to perish there with hunger and cold; so cruel were their tender mercies. 25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. We need wisdom in knowing how to apply those principles to our lives. When we last left Joseph, his father had sent him to check up on his older brothers in Shechem. Moses did not tell us that after Joseph was promoted by Pharaoh he lived “happily ever after.” Joseph has been promoted for a definite purpose, and we dare not overlook this in the joy of seeing him taken out of the pit and placed in a position of power and prestige in Pharaoh’s palace. I imagine Joseph felt that way as he was tied to the back of a camel and led down into Egypt. The word “kindness” is the Hebrew hesed, a word normally used to describe God’s unfailing lovingkindness to His people. Joseph had no way of knowing what was ahead of him.
